What Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (accomplished) for hard swinging modern jazz, so has Hamburg drummer Björn Lücker’s New Aquarian Jazz Ensemble done for the current jazz scene in his hometown. We’re talking about continuity in transition and guardianship of the tradition in the sense that newer and younger colleagues are constantly re-defining the interrelation between form and freedom, the individual and the collective, and preservation and renewal.
Björn Lücker, whose core is jazz and who is schooled in both jazz as well as classical music, is a prominent figure in his field in Hamburg. He combines the refinement of a musician who has played with many of the greats in improvised music and expanded his horizons on various continents with the straightforwardness of one who has found the place from which he lets his musical curiosity wander afar.
For well over ten years Lücker has applied the moniker “Aquarian” to all of his projects where he delivers the compositional material, which then translates itself into music through the process of improvisation. After the initial impact of the solo program “Aquarian Drum Song” and the intensive phase with the “Aquarian Jazz Trio” featuring pianist Florian Weber and bassist Gary Peacock, a quintet with bass, drums piano and two contrasting horns has emerged over the years as the format in which his vision palpably achieves expression.
With the album “Free From Form For Feeling”, Lücker introduces the newly formed “New Aquarian Jazz Ensemble”, a quintet with very versatile, expressive, and communicative young players from the Hamburg scene. The “tongue-in-cheek” alliteration in the title itself naturally refers to the concept. While Lücker indeed lays out a form for the interactive playing through his melodic succinctness, versatility of pulse and the multifacetedness of sound within his compositions, it is obvious here that form is not to be seen as a limit to improvisation but more as something to grow out of and to create the feeling, intuition and power which breathes life into music.
